Course Objectives:

CO 1: Use nursing judgment to lead evidence-based practice initiatives in appropriate nursing practice settings.

CO 3: Design leadership endeavors to promote human flourishing through learning

CO 6: Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare team members in developing new knowledge and disseminating existing best evidence in applicable nursing leadership practice settings

Learning Activities:

 

PROJECT 1: RAPID-CYCLE IMPROVEMENT PLAN

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare the student for nursing practice at the doctoral level through a practice immersion experience in alignment with DNP Essential IV. The student will utilize the practice site of their choice to create a rapid cycle improvement plan to address an information technology issue effecting nursing leaders.

Preparing the paper: Meet with a stakeholder that works information technology in your practice site. Discuss current issues and possible needs in the department. Choose one problem to focus in on. Work together with the stakeholder to formulate ideas for a rapid-cycle improvement plan

 

PROJECT 2: Executive Summary 1

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare the student for nursing practice at the doctoral level through a practice immersion experience in alignment with DNP Essential V. The student will utilize the practice site of their choice to develop and/or evaluate an organizational healthcare policy in a complex healthcare system.

 

Preparing the paper:

1. Decide on a problem of interest to evaluate at your practice site.

2. Perform a thorough search for any organizational policy that may apply to the problem of interest being examined. Select one policy to examine and use for this project. If there is not a policy at the organization, find a policy that belongs to a national or local organization that applies to the problem of interest and examine that.

3. Choose three agencies or organizations (local, state, regional, national or global) that influence this policy/procedure at your practice site and review how these organizations impact the policy.

4. Review factors within your practice site organization that may influence the policy (organizational culture, availability of resources, etc).

5. Do a brief literature search to determine the scope of the problem that the policy addresses. Review best practices as stated in the literature surrounding the problem. Determine if the policy appropriately addresses the problem using best practice procedures.

6. Interview at least two content experts on the problem of interest (within or outside of the organization). How does the organization address the problem? Discuss the policy that you located and ask how it is enforced at the organizational level? What are the difficulties surrounding the policy? What are the measures to determine if the policy is followed?

PROJECT 3: Executive Summary 3

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to prepare the student for nursing practice at the doctoral level through a practice immersion experience in alignment with DNP Essential VI. The student will utilize the practice site of their choice to evaluate and make recommendations for practice regarding a complex practice or organizational issue involving multiple healthcare disciplines that a nurse leader might encounter.

Preparing the paper:

1.

1. Decide on a complex practice or organizational issue involving multiple healthcare disciplines that a nurse leader might encounter.

2. Do a brief literature search to determine the scope of the problem.  Review best practices as stated in the literature surrounding the problem.

3. Examine a practice model that applies to the host organization and addresses the issue. How does the model incorporate the role of various disciplines? How does it address the problem? How might you determine if this model is effective through utilization of national standards and scholarly inquiry?

4. Identify at least three professions/disciplines that might be directly or indirectly involved in addressing the issue.

5. Interview at least one person from each of the three disciplines who may have experience involving the complex practice or organizational issue being explored (within or outside of the organization). What role does each discipline play in addressing this issue? Is there a particular practice model, guideline, policy, standard of care, or other scholarly product that guides this discipline on this problem? Provide rationale and explanation for this standpoint. Specifically, discuss how the practice model you examined in step three might apply to this discipline? How does this discipline work in conjunction with other members of the team to address this issue? Are there scheduled meeting times regularly?
